Stampede kills 36 in Mali

Mali, February 22: Thirty-six people have been killed in a stampede in Mali as the crowd reportedly tried to get close to a cleric at a religious ceremony.

The stampede occurred in Modibo Keita stadium in the Mali capital of Bamako on Monday night, leaving some 70 people injured in addition to the dead, AFP reported.

Most of the victims were taken to Bamako’s central hospital by civil protection and emergency services from Keita.

Anxious families are awaiting news from doctors on the list of the dead.

Last year, over two dozen people died in a stampede at a famous mosque in the northwestern city of Timbuktu during a festival.
