Stamp paper scam unearthed

Ujjain, September 15: A stamp paper scam worth Rs 2.34 crore was unearthed in the district treasury in Ujjain.

During the routine checking it was found that stamp papers issued to different treasuries have neither reached their destinations, nor a demand for them had come in, Collector M Geeta said.

The district treasury is also the state centre for distribution of these papers.

The scrutiny of record revealed that stamp papers have been issued against fake demands to Ashoknagar, Satna, Guna, Balaghat and other treasuries and sub treasuries, she said.

The bungling of stamp papers has taken place from January to March this year, the collector said.

One Ashok Sharma was the treasury store keeper from September 2008, she said, adding that he is on a more than two months leave from April.

Geeta said that following an inquiry, Sharma has been suspended and an FIR has been lodged against him.

An inquiry has been ordered against the then Verification Officer Sharad Girkar. The then treasury officer Ashok Kumar Joshi has been served show cause notice, she said.

A high level team was coming from Bhopal to carry out the investigation, the collector said.
