Stalker drives girl student to suicide

Kadapa, June 27: An 18-year-old engineering student, Lakshmi Devi, committed suicide unable to bear harassment by a youth in the name of love at Balijapalle of Rajampet town today. A meritorious student, Lakshmi Devi was pursuing her first year B.Tech from Modugula Kalavathi Engineering College. Though hailing from a poor family, she had taken up professional education with encouragement of her parents Ramachandraiah and Rangamma.

According to her friends and relatives, the girl was under extreme pressure from a youth Raghvendra Kumar of the same locality. A first year MCA student of Annamacharya Engineering College, Kumar had been stalking Lakshmi for the past two years, pressurising her to love him. He was allegedly harassing her by sending indecent SMSes on her cellphone.

It is learnt that he had even dashed her with his scooter recently and terrorised her while she was returning home from college. With increasing harassment from the boy, Lakshmi resorted to the extreme step of hanging herself from the ceiling fan in her room.

Based on the complaint lodged by Lakshmi’s family members, Rajampet police registered a case and took Raghvendra Kumar into custody. Meanwhile, AISF district unit condemned the incident and demanded stringent action against Raghvendra.

The AISF district secretary said Lakshmi had complained to the college authorities about the harassment, but no action was taken. He demanded an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the family members of Lakshmi.
