SSC student hangs herself in Mumbai

Mumbai, January 28: A 15-year-old SSC student from Atomic Energy Central school in Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (Barc) premises committed suicide on Tuesday afternoon. Shaili Naik was found hanging from the ceiling fan by her parents. Her maternal cousin, also a class X student, had similarly ended her life last week in Byculla.

When Shaili’s parents returned after attending a cultural event at around 1pm, Shaili, who was alone in the house, did not answer the door despite repeated attempts. The suicide came to light when a neighbour climbed into the house and found the girl hanging from the fan.

Shaili’s father Vilas Naik, who works in Barc’s electrical department, said, “Our daughter was a bright student and scored around 90% marks in all subjects. She was happy and wasn’t under any stress or pressure.”

Jalinder Khandagle, assistant commissioner of police, Trombay, said, “The reason is not known as there was no suicide note. Naik’s cousin had hanged herself last week. Naik was very attached to her, and her death could have led the girl into depression.”
