Srisailam hydel power station begins operations

Hyderabad, December 27: More than two months after the flood waters submerged the Srisailam hydel power station in October, four of the seven units (110 MW each) of the Srisailam Right Bank Power Station today started operations. The remaining three units will start functioning from January 15. The Srisailam Left Bank Power Station, which was also submerged in the flood waters, has already started its operations.

The officials of the Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) are working round-the-clock to get all the units of Srisailam Hydel Power Project operationalised by January 15. At the Vijayawada Thermal Power Station (VTPS), transformers which got burnt have been replaced and put for testing.

The 500 MW thermal power station is likely to be put into operation by January 1. The annual overhaul of thermal stations has been taken up in a phased manner and will be completed by mid January.

In a review meeting on power supply position held here today, Chief Minister K Rosaiah asked the APGenco to go ahead with the grounding of the first phase (700 MW) of the gas-based power project (out of the total of 2100 MW) at Karimnagar using Regasified Liquefied Natural Gas (RLNG) costing around Rs.2,500 crore. Proposals have also been cleared for laying of gas pipeline from Shamirpet to Nedunnuru village in Karimnagar district for the power plant.

The Chief Minister gave nod to APTransco for purchasing the need-based additional power between February and March.

He wanted the APTransco and Discoms to ensure quality power supply to domestic, agriculture and industry sectors.

He wanted the consumer grievance cell to be strengthened and all lands required for sub stations should be handed over to the authorities concerned without any delay pending payment by APTransco and Discoms as per values fixed by the Government.

The Chief Minister asked the APGenco to expedite the commissioning and operation of Vijayawada Stage IV, Kakatiya Stage I, Rayalaseema Stage III and Kothagudem Stage VI between January and November.

On completion, all these projects will make 1,710 MW additional power available for supply by the end of next year. The officials informed that about 5,000 MW power will be produced to meet various requirements by 2012-13.
