MUMBAI: The year 2018, was beyond a doubt, a long, long roller-coaster ride and an extremely eventful year. Isn’t it?
Talking about Bollywood, celebrities got married, become pregnant, awarded and even arrested. The year also witnessed some untimely demise in the entertainment industry, the most prominent one being veteran actress Sridevi.
The entertainment world also hogged headlines in 2018 due to its biggest controversies. Here’s a quick wrap up from January to December.
January
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus, Padmavati finally release on January 25 as “Padmavat” following long-stretched controversies since its shooting started. Stones were pelted at a school bus of terrified students ducking in fear, threats of Jauhar were made, a blanket ban was announced but none stopped and the film shattered records on a large scale minting almost Rs 600 crore at the worldwide box office.
Salman Khan received death threats from a gangster from the Bishnoi community that worships black bucks.
Also in January, Bhabhiji famed television actress Shilpa Shinde won the reality show Bigg Boss Season 11 aired on Colors TV.
February:
February saw the sudden and untimely death of ageless beauty, vibrant, beautiful, brilliant actress Sridevi that left the country shocked.
The iconic veteran actress breathed her last on February 24 at the age of 54 in Dubai while attending the marriage along with husband Boney Kapoor and younger daughter Khushi. She plunged the entire country into a pall of gloom as her fans and admirers expressed shock and disbelief.
February was also when Malayalam actress Priya Prakash Varrier became a household name following her viral ‘wink’ song that turned the 18-year-old into an internet sensation and most search personality of the year.
March

The country is still mourning the demise of Sridevi when another shocker comes from Bollywood star Irrfan Khan.
Days after the internationally known acclaimed actor left fans, friends and colleagues worried by informing them via social media that his life had been shaken up by a “rare disease”, Irrfan revealed he has been diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumour.
Irrfan began his statement with an emotional quote by Margaret Mitchell — “Life is under no obligation to give us what we expect.”
Also, veteran Bollywood actor Jeetendra accused of sexual assault 47 years ago by his cousin. The victim claimed that the jumping jack of Bollywood sexually assaulted her in an inebriated state.
APRIL:
In April, Bollywood superstar Salman Khan was finally sentenced to five years of imprisonment by a Jodhpur court in the 19-year-old blackbuck poaching case.
The incident took place in Kankani village near Jodhpur on October 1-2, 1998, during the shooting of Bollywood film “Hum Saath Saath Hain”.
Salman also spent two days in jail while the other four co-accused stars — Sonali Bendre, Saif Ali Khan, Tabu and Neelam — were acquitted of all charges.
MAY:
May and marriages spread the love in Bollywood.
Actress Sonam Kapoor tied the knot with long-time beau Anand Ahuja, a Delhi-based businessman in a traditional Anand Karaj ceremony. The National Award-winning actress photographs and video snippets of the pre-wedding, wedding and post-wedding celebrations went viral within hours via social media.
Also in May, Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor made their relationship official when both of them walked together hand-in-hand at Sonam and Anand ‘s wedding reception.
Actress and former beauty queen Neha Dhupia surprised her fans and friends from the industry with the news of her hush-hush wedding with actor and “best friend” Angad Bedi, son of ex Indian cricketer Bishan Singh Bedi earlier this year.
JUNE:
Ranbir Kapoor starrer Sanju is one of the biggest hit of 2018. The entertaining and emotional retelling of the yesteryear actor Sanjay Dutt’s tumultuous life touched the heights of success at the box office to collect Rs 334 crore. The biopic has been well received and appreciated by critics and audience.
Also, the ‘garbage’ video of actress Anushka Sharma and Cricketer Virat Kohli made the news in June when the celebrity couple tried to school a passerby for littering on the streets. And and and, ‘national jiju’ American singer-songwriter ‘Nick Jonas’ first visit to India.
JULY:
Another news shock the Bollywood when actress Sonali Bendre made the revelation on Twitter and Instagram that she has been diagnosed with a “high-grade cancer” and she is undergoing treatment in New York.
Also in July, Priyanka Chopra in the “Nick of time” broke the news of opting out of superstar Salman Khan starrer “Bharat” director Ali Abbas and Katrina Kaif was roped in for her role.
AUGUST:
In August, Priyanka Chopra, 36 and Nick Jonas, 25 solemnised their relationship with a traditional ‘roka’ ceremony. Priyanka posted on Instagram the intimate photograph following their pre-wedding Punjabi ritual at her residence to confess their love to the world.
Also, superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s daughter Suhana Khan shot for her maiden interview and magazine shoot for Vogue India’s August 2018 edition attracted much criticism. People on Twitter expressed disappointed at the decision to launch Suhana with a magazine cover.
SEPTEMBER:
The biggest is the #MeToo Movement of the entertainment industry this year. Actress Tanushree Dutta’s sexual harassment allegations against veteran actor Nana Patekar during the shooting of “Horn ‘Ok’ Pleassss” in 2008 brought into the spotlight once again when the former beauty queen spoke about her unpleasant experience of working with Nana. The interview inspired women across the country to spoken about sexual harassment in the entertainment, media and even the education industry.

In the wake of the #MeToo movement, superstar Aamir Khan and his wife Kiran Rao stepped away from a Gulshan Kumar biopic tentatively titled Mogul directed by Subhash Kapoor accused of molestation.
The power couple steps away as “someone” associated with it have been accused of sexual misconduct.
Also, actress Deepika Padukone makes her relationship with Ranveer Singh official by releasing a wedding card!
NOVEMBER:
Soon after the confirmation, wedding bells ring for the couple in November.
Ranveer Singh, 33 and Deepika, 32 tied the knot as per Konkani-style wedding followed by a traditional Anand Karaj ceremony in a dreamy Lake Como setting in Italy amidst a tight circle of family and friends, culminating a six-year-long love story in a ‘happily ever after’.
Also, actor Aamir Khan has taken full responsibility for the debacle of ‘Thugs Of Hindustan’, the big release of the year. Neha Dhupia and Angad welcomed first child- a baby girl.
DECEMBER:
December saw star-studded weddings. Priyanka and Nick solemnised their relationship with two wedding ceremonies, a Christian and a traditional Hindu wedding at Jodhpur’s Umaid Bhawan Palace. December also Television star Kapil Sharma and Ginni Chatrath tied the knot in Jalandhar and many more celebrities got hitched.
Also, Shah Rukh Khan’s Zero was release and saw the release of Ranveer Singh and Sara Ali Khan’s Simmba.
