Sri Lankan navy arrested eight fishermen from Tamil Nadu

Paruthithurai: Eight Tamil Nadu fishermen were arrested on Saturday by Sri Lankan Navy for allegedly fishing in the territorial waters in Sri Lanka, police said. The fishermen from Nagapattinam were fishing near Paruthithurai, when the Lankan naval personnel came and took them to Kangesanthurai port, as per the report.

The fishermen with their fishing boats, were arrested for entering International Maritime Boundary Line and fishing in the exclusive zone meant for Lankan fishermen, said Amala Xavier, joint director of the fisheries department in Nagapattinam. Their boats were also confiscated by the officials, reports HT.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami on June 22 had sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention to secure the release of 20 fishermen from the state and 137 boats, allegedly apprehended by the Sri Lankan Navy.
