Chennai, August 28: Sri Lankan Government was taking all measures for rehabilitation of internally displaced people since the end of the war against LTTE, a top envoy of the island nation said here today.
“It is only three months from now. The government has been doing what all it can do. Lot of welfare activities are going on. In the last month alone, 500 Sri Lankan families have gone back home from Tamil Nadu on voluntary basis,” newly appointed Sri Lankan Deputy High Commissioner to India Vadivel Krishnamurthy told reporters.
He said 112 play grounds had been set up in Northern province for rehabilitated children. The Ministry of Social Services had provided social security for senior citizens.
On trade, he said after the end of the war there was a conducive situation prevailing in Sri Lanka for investments.
“There are tremendous opportunities. We will certainly felicitate Indian companies to invest in Sri Lanka”, he said on the sidelines of a meeting organised by India-ASEAN Sri Lankan Chamber of Commerce and Industry here.
Earlier addressing the meeting, Krishnamoorthy said the bilateral trade between the two countries had grown ‘many folds’ over the years and as of 2008 it stood at USD 3.2 billion.
He said various sectors like IT, health care, education, tourism, processed foods, infrastructure, diamond, gems and jewellery are being targeted for attracting investments.
“There is a conducive climate (in Sri Lanka) and I appeal to Indian companies to be the early birds for picking up the right worms”, he said.
