Colombo: Three weeks ago Sri Lanka was shaken after Islamist bombers blew themselves killing more than 250 people.
Innocent Muslims in the nation are now being subjected to hatred, torture and harassment as a local Muslim was beaten up in the town of Chilaw on Sri Lanka’s west coast on Sunday in a dispute that started on Facebook, while several Mosques and Muslim owned stores were pelted with stones, TOI reports.
To contain the escalating tensions in the region curfew has been imposed.
“A police curfew has been imposed in Chilaw Police area with immediate effect until 6am tomorrow to control the tense situation,” police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekera told.
According to sources, the curfew would be lifted at 4am.
Soon after the alleged FB post created tensions in the region, a local Muslim said: “Later they pelted stones at three mosques and some Muslim-owned shops. Now the situation has calmed down, but we are scared of the night.”
He added one of the mosque’s suffered extensive damage.
A Video footage circulating on the internet shows several dozen young men shouting and throwing stones at a clothes store called New Hasmars, which locals said belonged to Hasmar who’s alleged FB post was used to trigger tensions
