Spurs beats Milan, Valencia ties Schalke

Spain, February 16: Champions League newcomer Tottenham has beaten seven-time champion AC Milan and Valencia has been held by Schalke in the first leg of the Champions League’s round of 16.

Peter Crouch scored the solo goal of the match for the north Londoners at the San Siro stadium, and veteran Spain striker Raul Gonzalez set a new European goalscoring record to give Schalke a 1-1 draw against the Spanish club at the Mestalla stadium, AFP reported.

Milan conceded the goal 10 minutes to the final whistle when Crouch completed a splendid counterattack started by Aaron Lennon.

Minutes before Crouch’s goal, Milan’s Gennaro Ivan Gattuso received a booking for a foul on Steven Pienaar that ruled him out of the second leg. He then attacked Tottenham assistant coach Joe Jordan on the touchline and shoved him.

In the other match of the night in Valencia, Raul, who ended his 16 years of footballing at the Bernabeu last summer and joined Germany’s Schalke, bagged the equalizer for a record 71st European goal on the 64th minute of the match.

Roberto Soldado’s goal from close range following French Jeremy Mathieu’s low cross had put Valencia ahead in the 17th minute.

Raul is the all-time top scorer in Champions League history.

On Wednesday, Arsenal hosts Barcelona which trounced the English side last season thanks to Lionel Messi’s four-goal salvo, and Roma takes on Shakhtar Donetsk.

Chelsea travels to FC Copenhagen next week and Real Madrid is scheduled to head to Lyon before Marseille hosts Manchester United and holder Inter Milan meets Bayern Munich to complete the last 16 action on February 23.
