SPOT Demands judicial probe into Kokrajhar riots

Society for Promotion of Tolerance (SPoT) secretary Syed Ali Hashmi has demanded that the Centre order an inquiry by a sitting judge of the High Court and initiate action against the culprits in the communal violence in Kokrajhar district of Assam.

Speaking to the media here on Wednesday, Syed Ali Hashmi demanded that the Union government introduce ‘Communal Violence Bill’ in Parliament and pass it in the ensuing session. He lamented that though riots took place in Assam, the Muslim Parliamentarians have failed to raise the riots’ issue.

Hashmi said that the cause of riots was the over reaction of a section of the media about infiltration of Bangladeshis. Though no reason can justify murder of human beings and other human rights violations, he said the reality was that constitution of Bodo Territorial Council (BTC) provided opportunity to unsocial elements to claim more area for BTC by raising hue and cry that Muslims, who have come back after being driven away in 1993-94 riots were new comers. He alleged that fresh attacks were launched for ethnic cleaning on this pretext.

Hashmi urged the Union Government to force the Myanmar government to stop ethnic violence by withholding aid until justice was done to Rohingya Muslims. He also appealed to Myanmar leader and Nobel laureate Aung Suu Kyi to pay attention to the reports of Amnesty International on atrocities committed by security personnel in Myanmar and try to stop act of ethic leaning and vulgar violence forthwith.
