Sports Ministry seeks detailed report over well-being of differently-abled athletes

Minister of State for Sports Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday sought a detailed report from the Paralympic Committee of India on the organisation of the National Para-Athletic Games after differently-abled athletes complained of inadequate facilities at the buliding they were housed in.

“Well-being of all athletes is a priority for us. Differently-abled athletes and their well-being is a priority for us. We are examining the matter and looking into the reasons for mismanagement of the event. Detailed report has been asked on the organisation of the National Para-Athletic Games from Paralympic Committee of India,” Sonowal tweeted.

Meanwhile, sports activist Rahul Mehra termed the incident as a systemic failure, saying governments come and go but there is no empathy.

“There is a systematic failure. Governments come and go but there is no empathy. They are not asking for the moon, they just need basic minimum requirement of a decent shelter with clean water and a good diet,” said Mehra

Over 700 differently-abled athletes, who are participating in the National Para-Athletic Championship, have complained that the building that they were housed in did not have basic facilities like water and fans, and was replete with mosquitoes.

The National Para Power lifting Championships and National Athletics Championships are being held at the Weightlifting Auditorium in Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium Complex and Janhit Para Sports Grounds in Ghaziabad. (ANI)
