Hyderabad, September 21: Most speedbreakers in the Twin Cities of Greater Hyderabad are unsafe for motorists and also put tremendous pressure on the spine.
The speedbreakers on the approach route to the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad are especially rough on the vehicle and body, feel many citizens.
So far, the State government hasn’t evolved a proper policy on the size or placement of speedbreakers.
Even the Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (UMTA) under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary P Ramakanth Reddy has expressed its displeasure over speed breakers.
In the UMTA meetings, Ramakanth Reddy gave directions to the Commissioner of Police, Cyberabad and Hyderabad and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to take streamline the speedbreakers especially on the approach route to the airport immediately by involving Rajiv Gandhi International Airport officials. So far, no action has however been taken.
A majority of the speedbreakers in the Twin Cities are bumpy, too wide and unfit for driving.
The UMTA chairman advised the city Police and GHMC departments to evolve a clear-cut policy on speedbreakers and permitting the same in residential colonies.
The UMTA committee asked Commissioner of Police, Cyberabad to advise the GMR Group to smoothen the existing speedbreakers within the airport premises and also on the roads leading to the airport to allow a safe and comfortable journey.
However, Traffic Police did not recommend the use of of speedbreakers from the road leading from Shamshabad airport to Hyderabad city. During the UMTA meetings, Principal Secretary for Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) emphasised the need for evolving policy on speedbreakers and parking areas in the city.
A detailed study was conducted by the Traffic Police and submitted to the GHMC in February this year requesting the latter to take action for laying the speedbreakers in 21 places in residential areas. The report is gathering dust in the GHMC office.
They suggested that speedbreakers are needed on minor roads and other important stretches to controlling vehicular speed and prevent accidents.
