Special squad to tackle sexual harassment

Mumbai, November 09: The murders of Mumbai bravehearts Keenan and Reuben, who died defending their friends against sexual harassment, have served as a wake-up call for the police. They have now formed a special squad to tackle sexual harassment in the city.

The squad will consist of five young police personnel. Three of these police personnel including one female constable will be in plain clothes.

The squad will mingle with crowds and constantly patrol colleges, malls and crowded streets.

Offenders will be booked under Sections 110 and 117 of the Bombay police act on charges of nuisance and mischief.

Keenan’s family and friends have welcomed the decision and hope for efficient and continued enforcement.

Priyanka Fernandes, Keenan’s girlfriend, said, “There should also be a specific helpline if possible so that girls can get in touch with the police soon in such times.”

While policing needs to improve, citizens also say the public needs to be sensitised about crimes against women so that such incidents do not occur in the future.
