Mumbai, December 30: The Mumbai Police, on high alert for the New Year’s Eve, have for the first time set up a special helpline for the occasion. The citizens can dial 22633333 to report any incident of harassment of women or law and order problems across the city.
Himanshu Roy, joint commissioner of police (Law and order), said that the helpline could be used to report eve teasing, molestation, drinking in public, drunken driving and violence. “The helpline number will be operational from the morning of December 31 to the morning of January 1. Besides, there will always be the standard police helpline — 100.”
He added that everyone of the 40,000-plus Mumbai police contingent would be out to maintain law and order. Special anti-eve-teasing squads would also be on the watchout.
“Pub and hotel owners have been requested to ensure that no untoward incidents take place in their premises. They have been told to deploy their own security, try to dissuade drunk customers from driving their vehicles, and to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras,” Roy said.
The police on Wednesday will meet owners of boats, yachts and launches to discuss the safety parameters for on-board parties.
