Special exam for 7,200 unsuccessful UPTU students

Lucknow, July 24: The Academic Council of the Uttar Pradesh Technical University (UPTU) decided to hold special examinations for the 7,200 students who had failed in BTech first-year.

Out of a total of 12 papers, these students had failed in five to seven papers and were demanding special examinations. On Thursday, over 200 of them staged a dharna on the campus.

UPTU Registrar U S Tomer said, “To qualify for the second year, these students will have to aggregate at least 24 out of the total 42 credits. The special examinations will begin from August 8.”

From this academic session, the council decided to introduce one regular and one part-time MTech course in electronics engineering in the Institute of Engineering and Technology, Lucknow.

It also approved another part-time MTech course in electrical engineering in the same institute. There will be 15 seats in each course. These proposals will be tabled before the Executive Council on July 28 for final approval.

The council has also given its nod to introduce a masters’ course in architecture in urban planning and development in the Lucknow College of Architecture from the current session. It approved an increase of 20 seats in the bachelor of architecture course in the college, taking the total number of seats to 60.

It was further decided that if a pharmacy college wants to start masters in pharmacy course, it will be mandatory to get its BPharma course approved by the Pharmacy Council of India. Till now, there was no such condition for starting a MPharma course.

“Professional colleges that perform well in academics and have received the Academic Excellence Award may be given autonomous status. This has been done to motivate the colleges which have been doing well. A committee will soon be formed to frame a policy for this purpose,” Tomer said.

For the 2009-10 session, first-year classes begin from September 4. The first semester examinations will start from December 21 and the second semester from May 22, 2010.

UPTU gets new V-CDr Kripa Shanker, professor at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, has been appointed the new vice-chancellor of UPTU for three years from the date of joining. He will replace Prof Premvrat, who will complete his three-year tenure on July 30. Premvrat will join IIT-Delhi.
