Special cabinet meeting may be convened for anti-rape law

Finance Minister P. Chidambaram on Friday ruled out any differences within the government, and said a special cabinet meeting may be called soon to clear the anti-rape law.

“May be there will be a special cabinet meeting early. There are no differences in the government. There are different points of view expressed by different people. Someone says that you must describe it as sexual assault and others who say no, you must retain the word rape,” he told media here.

Meanwhile, Union Law Minister Ashwani Kumar said the government had produced the bill in a record time.

“You will have the new rape law early next week. And the fact remains that this government in a record time produced an ordinance and in record time has produced a new bill,” he said.

President Pranab Mukherjee had earlier in February given his assent to the government”s amended anti-rape laws that it introduced through an ordinance. (ANI)
