Hyderabad, August 08: Heated exchanges were witnessed between the Congress and TDP corporators over installation of the statue of former chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy on the GHMC head office premises.
While Congress members said the statue would be a fitting gesture to the departed soul ahead of his first death anniversary next month as he was instrumental in creating the GHMC, the TDP members supported by BJP corporators demanded that in that case the statues of other national leaders should also be installed in the office.
As the arguments continued, mayor Banda Karthika Reddy said the issue would be discussed in the standing committee first and then put before the council for a final decision. The members then calmed down and resumed their seats.
The second day of the third ordinary meeting of the GHMC also saw some decisions taken by the council. It has decided to entrust maintenance of the GHMC community halls to the Self-Help Groups (SHGs) under the supervision of ward committees. A special programme will be taken up in coordination with the police to pick up beggars from busy traffic junctions and put them in community halls. A resolution has been passed to construct a guest house for corporators and an official bungalow for the mayor.
