A day after being dethroned in Uttar Pradesh, BSP chief Mayawati on Wednesday alleged the Samajwadi Party – which won a clear mandate – would take the state backwards.
“Samajwadi Party will put my government’s welfare programmes in cold storage,” she told a press conference, called minutes after she submitted her resignation to Governor BL Joshi.
“As results are not favourable for the party, I have recommended to UP Governor to dissolve the House and have tendered my resignation,” Mayawati said.
Reflecting on poll results, she said that 70 percent of Muslim votes went to SP as Congress appeared weak in the state.
Looking back, Mayawati said she had taken over the state when it was in a very bad shape
“My government worked hard to undo the damage and overcome problems,” she said.
Mayawati also hit out at the Centre saying it didn’t support her government and adopted a negative attitude.
She however expressed satisfaction that the party’s main Dalit base stayed with it, “otherwise we would have fared very badly”.
