Srinagar, October 29: Jammu and Kashmir’s Congress unit chief Saif-ud-Din Soz will be briefing the party leadership about Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s statement that the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) will be revoked from ‘some areas of the state’, sources said Saturday.
Party sources added Soz is leaving for New Delhi Sunday.
He has already briefed some senior Congress leaders about the manner in which the chief minister made the statement at a police function Oct 21 without consulting his coalition partner Congress or the cabinet.
‘It’s a serious issue as the chief minister has abandoned consultations with the ally Congress on issues of such importance,’ a senior party leader close to Soz, declining to be identified, told IANS.
‘This has not happened for the first time, it has been happening time and again. This is what Soz will be telling the party leaders in New Delhi,’ the leader added.
The AFSPA, which gives sweeping powers to the armed forces to scout, seize, detain and arrest with impunity, was invoked in the valley in 1990 and in the Jammu region in 2001.
