South Korean, Polish presidents meet on economic ties

Seoul, July 08:South Korean President Lee Myung-bak met with his Polish counterpart Wednesday on economic ties amid Warsaw’s growing interest in the region.

The meeting falls into Polish aims to “increase the role of Asia and developing contacts with the most important partners in the region,” the president’s chancellery said Wednesday.

On the agenda were XXXenergy, resourcesXXX and the defence industry.

Lee said Tuesday that South Korea was interested in helping to build nuclear and other energy plants in the heavily coal-reliant nation. Lee added he hoped South Korean companies would take part in building Poland’s first LNG terminal.

Lee kicked-off his visit Tuesday by attending the Polish-Korean Economic Forum as the countries marked 20 years of diplomatic relations. He said South Korea wanted to take part in Polish infrastructure projects, including roads and railways.

He was to meet later Wednesday with Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

Lee will next travel to L’Aquila, Italy to attend an extended G-8 summit on climate change. He then heads for a three-day visit to Sweden, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the European Union.

Poland is one of South Korea’s largest trade partners in Europe, and has invested there some 2 billion dollars, the daily Rzeczpospolita reported.

Lee attended the forum along with delegates from Korean Air, Samsung, Hyundai and Daewoo. The one-day meeting drew in 20,000 visitors and contracts worth over 100 million dollars, Lee’s office said
