Gurugram (Haryana): Ghazals, which are considered among the top soothing genres of Indian music, turns into mesmerising renditions in the soulful vocals of Sonu Nigam.
The singer is set to usher in the magic of the ghazal in the eight season of MTV’s Unplugged series, where he will be seen crooning songs by legends like Ghulam Ali, Pankaj Udhas and Jagjit Singh.
Evergreen melodies like Jagjit Singh’s ‘Jhuki Jhuki Si Nazar’ and ‘Koi Yeh Kaise Bataye’ along with Ghulam Ali’s ‘Apni Taswir’ will be given a modern twist by Sonu Nigam.
Speaking about the inspiration behind singing ghazal, Sonu said that he wanted to give the younger generation a taste of the classic treasure to enable them to discover the beauty of the musical genre.
“We have tried to give a modern twist to these old songs, wrap it up in new attire and present it to the audience. We were deciding on the kind of songs we can incorporate in this episode. We discussed if I should sing my own songs or present some old classic numbers. We finally decided on ghazals. We were lucky enough to grow up with this kind of music, but today’s generation is not aware of it,” Sonu said.
The singer said platforms like MTV provided artists certain freedoms that are usually not offered in the world of commercial music.
“Generally when we sing a song, we are told everything about how to sing and what to sing. But over here, we are free to sing what we want,” he said.
The latest season of Royal Stag Barrel Select MTV Unplugged will feature a unique and beautiful line up of soul-stirring vocals and interesting musical orchestration by some of the musical geniuses including Diljit Dosanjh, Guru Randhawa, Benny Dayal, Jonita Gandhi, Shahid Malaya and Neeti Mohan, who will perform their favourite songs unplugged.
