New Delhi, August 04: UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Thursday underwent a major surgery in the United States and will stay out of the country for about three to four weeks.
As per reports, the surgery performed on the Congress party president was successful and she had been advised to take adequate rest for three-four weeks.
Confirming the news, Congress spokesperson Janardan Dwivedi said, “Sonia Gandhi has been unwell for quite some time and the doctors attending her had advised her to undergo a surgery, for which she had flown to the United States recently.”
Briefing the press reporters on her health, Dwivedi said, “The abdominal surgery performed on her has been successful and she had been advised to take full rest.”
The Congress spokesperson further informed that in Sonia Gandhi’s absence a group of four people will look after the affairs of the party and works related to the National Advisory Council.
“In her absence, four top leaders including Defence Minister AK Antony, Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi, Sonia’s political advisor Ahmed Patel and Janardan Dwivedi will look after the party affairs,” he said.
The Congress leadership was earlier tight-lipped about party president’s illness. First it was reported that Sonia was down with a viral fever, which was denied by the party high command.
Then there were speculations that she might he suffering from a major heart ailment, which later turned out to be an abdominal problem.
