Hyderabad, July 12: Congress president Sonia Gandhi has praised Sri Krishnadevaraya, the emperor of the mighty Vijayanagar kingdom, saying his empire was noted for its commitment for people’s welfare and numerous contributions to music, poetry, arts and culture.
“Sri Krishnadevaraya ensured that his empire became known to history not only for its political achievements but also for its cultural accomplishments,” she said in a message to Andhra Pradesh Information and Culture Minister J Geeta Reddy on the occasion of the 500th Coronation Day celebrations of Sri Krishnadevaraya.
The 500th anniversary of his coronation is an occasion for recalling the most distinguished personality whose name continues to inspire succeeding generations.
Thanking the state government for inviting her to participate in the inaugural and closing programmes, Gandhi, however, expressed her inability to attend due to pressing commitments.
The 500th Coronation Day celebrations were inaugurated by President Pratibha Patil here recently.
