Sonia, Rahul express grief over loss of lives in Puttingal temple fire

New Delhi: Expressing deep shock and grief at the tragic incident of deaths and injuries caused by a massive fire at the Puttingal temple in Kerala’s Kollam District, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Sunday asked the government to ensure ample and immediate relief measures.

Sonia Gandhi, issuing a statement, also prayed for the departed souls and well being of the injured.

Meanwhile, party vice-president Rahul Gandhi also expressed grief, saying his prayers are with the families of those who have lost their loved ones in this terrible tragedy.

“News of the devastating fire at Puttingal temple in Kollam, Kerala is extremely shocking. My prayers are with the families of those who’ve lost loved ones in this terrible tragedy,” Rahul tweeted.

He also said he has spoken to Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy to ensure that adequate relief, medical care and assistance are being provided to the injured at the earliest.

At least 83 people have lost their lives while more than 350 have been injured in the tragic fire that took place in the wee hours on Sunday.

An explosion in piles of crackers during fireworks display is said to be the reason behind the fire that broke out around 3.30 a.m.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced ex-gratia relief of Rs. 2 lakh to next of the kin of the deceased and Rs. 50,000 to critically injured in the incident. (ANI)
