Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Monday wrote to Nepal Prime Minister Sushil Koirala, expressing her grief for the devastation caused by the massive earthquake that resulted in the death of thousands.
“I am deeply grieved and shocked by the devastation caused by the massive earthquake in Nepal and the aftershocks that followed. The tragic loss of thousands of lives and the enormity of destruction has saddened us all. I myself and on behalf of the members of the Indian National Congress, convey our heartfelt condolences to the people of Nepal,” Sonia Gandhi wrote.
“Our two countries have a historic relationship and there exists a natural affinity between the people of India and Nepal, The Indian National Congress wholeheartedly supports the rescue and relief operations being undertaken by the Indian Air Force and Army,” she added.
Saturday’s earthquake , which measured 7.9 on the Richter scale, resulted in the deaths of over 3,200 people in Nepal, while 59 people were killed in India.
The calamity, one of the worst in over 80 years, was followed by 55 aftershocks. (ANI)
