Sonia to address farmers’ rally in Saurashtra in May

New Delhi: Congress president Sonia Gandhi will be addressing a farmers’ rally in Saurashtra region of Gujarat in the first fortnight of May at a time when the BJP is faced with problems in the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Party sources said the exact date and venue for the meeting would be decided next fortnight.

The rally would be Gandhi’s first major programme in Gujarat after the Congress’s impressive show in the local body elections.

Plans are also afoot to have a meeting of party vice-president Rahul Gandhi in a region, other than Saurashtra.

Sonia’s visit also assumes significance as the BJP, which has been in power in the state for over two decades, is now faced with an uphill task following the agitation by the Patel community, which had backed the party over the years.
