Govt. of India is taking steps for the selection of new Vice Chancellor of Maulana Azad National Urdu University. Some vested persons are making attempts to get the person of their choice appointed as the new Vice Chancellor of Urdu University. Lobbying is going on in the
Ministry of HRD.
The former Vice Chancellor had left some agenda incomplete which the present incharge Vice Chancellor is trying to fulfill. He is not evading to take some policy decision. As per the University Grants Commission guidelines and the central act of the University, incharge VC has no powers to take policy decision. He cannot convene the meeting of Executive Council.
It is reported that Ministry of HRD had issued orders for the appointments of Dr. Khwaja Mohammed Shahid, PVC to appoint him as incharge VC on basis of which a notification was circulated saying that Dr. Shahid has taken over the responsibility of VC. The interesting thing is that taking advantage of his status as the confidant of the former VC, Dr. Shahid who is incharge VC is acting as VC with full powers. In this manner, he is concentrating on fulfilling the incomplete mission of the former VC by taking important policy decision. His supporters are claiming that Ministry of HRD did not appoint Dr. Shahid as incharge VC whereas in the university website his name figures as in charge VC. If Dr. Shahid is a full-fledged VC, why was a clarification was made in his appointment orders that he would continue as VC till the appointment of new VC. The activity of the search committee for the selection of new VC itself shows that Dr. Shahid is incharge VC but his supporters are claiming that he is a full-fledge VC and they are supporting all the action taken by in charge VC. Dr. Shahid has accelerated disciplinary actions against the persons whom the former VC had started. Every attempt is being made to finalize the revengeful cases before the declaration of the name of the new VC.
It is reported that the staff members of Urdu University are afraid of giving their opinions. The supporters of the previous VC are confident that the new VC would be the candidate recommended by the former VC. The staff members who had made objections against the cases in the past, are being harassed by saying that if they continue such activities, action would be taken against them through the new VC. It is reported that a strict vigil is being kept on the professors and other members of the staff who are opposing the north Indian lobby. There are reports that phone tapping is being made of the university’s landline. Such of the persons who hold fake degrees and got important post without being competent are afraid of getting their irregularities exposed if a harsh and disciplined VC is appointed. Urdu University sources indicated that the Media Advisor appointed by the previous VC is playing an important role for maintaining the dominance of the North Indians. He is keeping a strict vigil on the activities of every staff members through his coterie but as per rules the tenure of office of the Media Advisor is only one year since he has reached the age of superannuation. The senior most professor with whom the former VC had made injustice commented on the present state of affairs saying that only god can set right the affair of the university, otherwise the present coterie has been addicted to commit irregularities.
