Sodhi survives to guide Kiwis to historic win over England

Christchurch: New Zealand secured their first series win over England since 1999 after managing a dramatic draw in the second Test at Hagley Oval here to claim the series 1-0.

England needed to claim ten wickets on the final day to win the series and for once it seemed possible when Stuart Broad dismissed Jeet Raval (19) and Kane Williamson for a duck with the first two deliveries of the day.

Tom Lathamn, who resumed the day batting on 25 survived long and scored 83 before being dismissed by Jack Leach in 67th over.

Colin de Grandhomme then scored 45 runs with 27 overs remaining.

However, it was Ish Sodhi, who batted for more than three hours for his unbeaten 56, along with Neil Wagner’s 103-ball stay, to draw the match.

Earlier, England set a massive 382-tun victory target for the hosts.

Joe Root’s team now still has to wait to break their 12-match winless streak away from home.

England will gain confidence and form ahead of their series against Pakistan next month. (ANI)
