Hderabad, July 12: Kommaragiri Ravi Chandra, a 38-year-old social engineer, was arrested for cheating nearly 300 women. Chandra, the police said, used to establish online friendships with the women and later emotionally blackmail them to extract money. This money was used to fund his lavish lifestyle.
Chandra, has cheated scores of women by pretending to be a doctor, a relative of a senior official and an HR manager of an MNC on different occasions.
Acting on a complaint filed by a victim, Rajani (name changed), the cyber crime cell of the Central Crime Station (CCS), Hyderabad, arrested Chandra near A-to-Z net café at Namalagundu in Secunderabad at 9.30 pm on Thursday.
It is learnt that Chandra introduced himself to Rajani’s family as a doctor. He had extracted Rs 20,000 from Rajani by saying that he needed the money to treat his father. However, when after some time Rajani sought her money back, he refused to pay. He even started harassing Rajani, who had developed an intimate relationship with him.
According to the police, Chandra used two profiles of user names eyewitness _rc@yahoo.com and eyewitnessrc@gmail.com. He used the same mail addresses to post false profiles in social networking sites like Orkut. “He admits that he has cheated close to 300 women,” said Mr R.S. Praveen Kumar, the DCP of the detective department, Hyderabad. He has been cheating women since 2001. A native of West Godavari, Chandra has also cheated some unemployed youth by promising them lucrative jobs abroad.
Police has advised people against revealing personal information while chatting online.
