BJP leader Smriti Irani is expected to pay a visit to Amethi on Monday days after her party fielded the former actress-turned-politician to contest against Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi in this traditional Congress bastion in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
“I am going to contest election against Congress and not against Congress’ B-team that is being led by the AAP. The broom is being held by the hand and that was evident when the hand and broom together formed a government in Delhi,” Irani said yesterday, referring to AAP’s Kumar Vishwas who is part of the triangular contest in the high-profile constituency.
The 38-year-old BJP leader will campaign in Amethi just for a day.
Voting in Amethi will take place on May 7, the penultimate phase of the nine phase general election.
After much deliberation, the BJP central leadership last week picked Irani to take on Rahul Gandhi. who has represented Amethi twice.
The former actress-turned-politician is a very good orator and can put up a credible fight in Amethi against Gandhi. Irani became a household name with a popular Hindi serial that stopped airing in 2008. BJP sources say she has little to lose as she still has four years left in the Rajya Sabha.
