Smoke at conference hall before PC speech

New Delhi, November 10: Delegates at the ongoing India Economic Summit had some anxious moments today when they were asked to leave the conference hall as there was some smoke billowing from behind the podium, just before Union Home Minister P Chidambaram was to address the gathering.

However, after a brief disruption, the session resumed in an adjoining hall.

The organisers of the international event being held at the Taj Palace hotel suspended the penultimate session briefly after they detected smoke coming from behind the podium at around 5 pm. Minister of State for Commerce Jyotiraditya Scindia was present at the session along with about 250 delegates.

Officials said Chidambaram’s programme, scheduled at 6:30 pm, remained unchanged.

An AC thermostat malfunctioned leading to smoke billowing out of it following which the delegates were asked to vacate the hall.

There were no reports of injury to anyone.
