London,June 01 :A SMILE costs nothing. But, its the speed of your giggle that can shape the first impressions others may have of you, say researchers.A new study has revealed that a too quick or too broad smile is often regarded as insincere while a slower giggle is perceived to be much more genuine, British tabloid Daily Express reported. For most people, smiling at a first meeting is a natural response as they try to build up a rapport.
The study focused on how smiling can help businesses give their clients a more positive impression. The researchers identified three types of smiles as being a real turn- off. The Enthusiast, a huge smile showing the teeth, the Robot, a tiny polite smile, and the Big Freeze, a fixed, practised grimace, are ones to avoid, according to the study.
The study was carried out by the Go Group, based in Glasgow, which advises new businesses.
Development director Lesley Meechan said: “ An instant smile for anybody who comes your way does not make the other person feel special at all and can seem false. People perceive a slower, natural smile which floods the entire face to be more genuine.”
