Sleaze-accused officer given plum post

Hyderabad, January 14: LEAVE alone conducting an enquiry into the sleaze surrounding senior IPS officer PSR Anjaneyulu, director-general of police K Aravinda Rao appears to have rewarded him by posting him to the key post of IGP, Greyhounds. The move has stunned the IPS fraternity who see this as a taunt aimed at the media.

The earlier orders posting Anjaneyulu, a close confidante of Aravinda Rao, as IG, AP Special Police, were cancelled and he was posted as IG Greyhounds. The posting of IPS officer AB Venkateswara Rao as additional commissioner (crime) too has been cancelled. He has been retained in the APSP.

Top sources told Express that soon after returning from Vijayawada, Anjaneyulu met Aravinda Rao.

Though Anjaneyulu was kept in waiting after being relieved of his duties as Vijayawada police commissioner, in the wake of a news channel expose on the sleaze surrounding him, he was given posting as IG, APSP within a matter of four days.

However, it is learnt that Anjaneyulu was keen on getting hold of an important assignment before he goes on study tour to the US in May, after which the DGP took up the matter with chief minister Kiran Kumar Reddy.

Sources said Aravinda Rao’s word prevailed and fresh orders were issued on Thursday posting Anjaneyulu to the antinaxalite Greyhounds. It is further learnt that Anjaneyulu also met the chief minister a few days ago. Officers who work in Greyhounds draw 50 per cent more salary than their counterparts. Stunned by the development, many police officers felt that instead of ordering an enquiry into the allegations against Anjaneyulu, the DGP chose to reward him by posting him to a key post.

“‘It cannot get worse than this,” most of them remarked and said the move was aimed at taunting the media which had “exposed” Anjaneyulu.

Though Aravinda Rao had assured that an officer of the rank of additional DGP would probe the allegations against Anjaneyulu, nothing has moved so far. Not even an enquiry officer was appointed.

Anjaneyulu, a 1992 batch IPS officer, was recently promoted from DIG to IG. It was only on Wednesday that the High Court served notices to Aravinda Rao and Anjaneyulu on a petition filed by Vamsi, chief of TDP’s Vijayawada unit, who said he faced threat to his life from Anjaneyulu.
