Slain NIA officer Tanzil Ahmed’s wife battling for life

New Delhi: After sustaining four bullet injuries, the 40-year-old Farzana, wife of slain NIA officer Mohammad Tanzeel Ahmed, is battling for life at Fortis Hospital in Noida. She has received the bullet injuries in her abdomen and leg.

The hospital authorities issued a release on Sunday morning, saying, “The patient has been brought in a critical condition. Our doctors are providing the best medical treatment to treat the patient. As a matter of patient confidentiality, we cannot comment any further.”

Late evening, sources said Farzana had undergone surgery and was kept “under supervision in ICU”. She is a teacher in a government school near Batla House. The couple’s 15-year-old daughter Zimnish and 12-year-old son Shahbaaz escaped unhurt in the attack by unidentified men in UP’s Bijnor district. The family stayed in South East Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh area.

Ahmed’s nephew Ayaz said his uncle was jovial in nature and maintained good relationship with everyone. Ahmed’s friend Manzar Ali, who stays two blocks away from his house, remembered him as a dedicated officer. Ali recounted, “He was very happy when he was inducted in the NIA in 2009 and he always praised his department. However, very few people knew that he worked with the NIA.”

After the post-mortem, the body was brought to the family’s Shaheen Bagh residence at 5.30 pm and taken to Batla House burial ground. As the BSF prepared for guard of honour at the burial ground, neighbours and relatives of the slain officer demanded “compensation”. They also raised slogans against the absence of government officials at the burial. “Okhla ka laal hai, Hindustan zindabad, UP Police murdabad,” was among the slogans raised.

Meanwhile, Delhi government Sunday announced Rs 1 crore compensation to the kin of the officer shot dead. “Delhi government will give Rs 1 crore compensation to the family of NIA officer Mohd Tanzeel Ahmed as part of its policy,” said a Delhi government official. He is being given compensation as he was residing in Delhi. Delhi Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra tweeted, “Thank you Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal for announcing a compensation to the kin of slain NIA officer”.
