Hyderabad: A day after notorious Maoist renegade-turned-gangster Mohammed Nayeemuddin was gunned down, Telangana Police today conducted searches at different places in Nalgonda district and arrested nine persons, including four family members of Nayeemuddin, on the charge of land grabbing and extortion.

The arrested also include five associates of Nayeemuddin and during the searches, land documents and weapons were recovered from their possession, a senior police officer said. Besides, two women linked to Nayeemuddin were arrested from Neknampur village near Hyderabad.

“Searches were conducted at seven places in Nalgonda, Miryalaguda and Bhongir, and cases were booked against 11 accused. Nine of them, including four of Nayeem’s family members, have been arrested and land documents and arms have been seized,” Nalgonda District Superintendent of Police N Prakash Reddy told PTI over phone.

45-year-old Mohammed Nayeemuddin alias Nayeem alias Balanna, a native of Bhongir town in Nalgonda district and wanted in a string of cases including the murder of an IPS officer in 1993, was yesterday killed in an alleged exchange of fire with police in Shadnagar town of Mahabubnagar district of the state.

The incident had occurred when police teams, while tracking a case of attempted extortion registered in Nizamabad district, came under fire from a suspiciously moving SUV near Millennium Colony on the outskirts of Shadnagar.

“Today, cases were registered against Nayeem’s sister Astana from whom a sword, tapancha (country-made revolver) and land documents were seized. Besides, Nayeem’s mother-in-law Sultana, his brother-in-law and brother-in-law’s wife were arrested. Four hundred original land documents, four detonators and country-made revolver were seized from them,” Reddy said.

Police also arrested five associates of Nayeem and seized tapanchas, detonators and hand grenade besides land documents, he said.

Any victims of land grabbing and extortion activity can approach the police. “We will definitely help them,” the SP said adding this drive would continue.

Narsingi police under Cyberabad Commissionerate, after receiving information about the location of the house being used as shelter by Nayeemuddin in Neknampur village on city outskirts, today arrested two women– Farhana and Ashiya, from whom over Rs 2 crore cash was seized yesterday.

Meanwhile, Nayeemuddin’s mother Tahera Begum alleged that police had taken her son alongwith three other family members two days ago and now his bullets-ridden body was returned to them.

Sitting beside his body kept in a freezer box at their house in Hyderabad, she claimed that her son had helped the police in several cases and demanded that police should reveal the whereabouts of the three others.

Hailing from Bhongir town in Nalgonda district,

Nayeemuddin got attracted towards the ideology of erstwhile CPI-ML People’s War group while studying in Degree College in 1990, police had said yesterday.

“He later joined Radical Student Union (RSU) of CPI ML (PW) and was made the organiser of RSU Bhongir town in year 1991. Later, he was arrested by Yadagirgutta Police and a tapancha (country-made weapon) and a grenade were seized from him,” the release stated.

After his release from jail, Nayeemuddin again went underground and joined Aleru Dalam of CPI ML(PW) as a member, and assumed the alias “Balanna”.

As part of an action team, Nayeemuddin had killed the then DIG of Police, K S Vyas at Lal Bahadur Stadium in Hyderabad on January 27, 1993.

In March 2007, Nayeemuddin absconded after attending court. NBWs are pending against him. He was evading arrest in a number of cases including the killing of KS Vyas, besides some former Maoists, the SP said.

The officer said Nayeemuddin is later believed to have formed a criminal gang and was indulging in many extortions, and kidnappings which were not reported to police due to fear of reprisal.
