Six securitymen, 30 persons hurt in lathicharge

Sibsagar, March 18: At least 30 persons besides six securitymen were injured, some of them seriously, in a mob violence after a youth was knocked down by a vehicle in which top ONGC officers were travelling in upper Assam’s Sibsagar district today.

The top officials, Executive Director P S V Rao, Human Resource director A K Balyan and Director (Onshore) Ajit Hazarika were returning after a programme when their vehicle collided head on with a motorcyclist who died on the spot at 2.30 pm.

The situation became tense when irate local villagers, protesting against the death of the youth, started pelting stones at the CISF security guards guarding the convoy of the top ONGC executives.

As the crowd turned violent, the securitymen resorted to lathicharge in which at least 30 persons were injured.

At least six securitymen were also injured in the incident.
