Split, July 26: Six people died when a Croatian passenger train derailed near the Adriatic city of Split in sweltering heat at the height of the summer holiday season, police said.
A train in Croatia has crashed on the line between Zagreb and the coastal city of Split, killing at least six people and injuring 20, officials say.
The accident happened when the two-carriage train derailed shortly after noon near the village of Rudine, around 30km (19 miles) from its destination.
The front carriage then twice hit the sides of a cutting through a hillside, before breaking apart from the second.
Transport officials said it was not yet known what had caused the derailment.
A similar tilting train reportedly derailed at the same location last year, although no-one was hurt in the incident.
One passenger injured in Friday’s crash, Zarko Rogan, 71, from Zagreb, said the train seemed to be travelling too fast.
“I told my wife: ‘We have a problem, this train’s brakes don’t work’,” he said.
About 90 passengers were believed to have been on board the train on Friday.
The route is frequently used by people travelling to holiday resorts on the Adriatic coast and it was not immediately clear if foreign tourists were among the casualties.
