Patna, November 30: With the arrests of four suspected Indian Mujahideen (IM) operatives in one week, investigators believe they are close to cracking two 2010 terror cases: the low-intensity blasts outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium in April and the Jama Masjid firing in September.
Ghayur Jamil and Ajmal were picked up from Sakri in Bihar on November 24 and Abdul Rahman and Mohammed Irshad Khan were arrested from Chennai on November 28.
Jamil and Ajmal were taken from Patna by the Delhi Police’s Special Cell on a Border Security Force Embraer jet while the airport was cordoned off.
Intelligence sources believe Ghayur Jamil, now in custody of the Special Cell, holds the key to solving both the Jama Masjid attack and the stadium blasts. He reportedly recruited over two dozen youths working from Nepal and India for terror outfits. Local police had a tough time arresting Ghayur and Ajmal with locals surrounding the Sakri police station.
Rahman, 19, who was arrested in Chennai on Tuesday, was deeply influenced by Jamil, a Madhubani resident. Rahman, a first-year computer science student in a private engineering college in Chennai, was arrested along with Irshad Khan (50).
Bihar police sources said Rahman, a resident of Urdu Bazar, Laheriasarai in Darbhanga, came in contact with Ghayur four years ago. As Jamil would move about Muslim-dominated regions of Madhubani and adjoining Darbhanga, Rahman became an ardent fan of his passionate religious discourses.
Rahman, son a small businessman, reportedly facilitated the escape of Abdus Subhan Qureshi alias Tauqeer during the 2008 crackdown.
The two low-intensity blasts outside the cricket stadium in Bangalore delayed an IPL match in April 2010 and injured at least eight people. Unidentified gunmen on a motorbike had opened fire on Taiwanese tourists in Old Delhi in September last year.
Pak national held in Madhubani
The Madhubani police, on a tip-off from the Intelligence Bureau, arrested a Pakistani national from near the court campus here on Tuesday. Mohammed Hamid Ali (48), a Karachi resident, was arrested around 2.30 pm on Tuesday. Ali’s son Mukhtar was arrested on November 10, 2010 by Jayanagar police for his involvement in a fake currency racket. Ali told the police he had come to Madhubani to meet his son.
