Six held on eve of UP Legislative Council polls

Lucknow, January 06: Six persons were arrested on the eve of Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council polls for allegedly trying to influence voters in favour of a Congress candidate by distributing liquor in Sitapur district, police said. The six were arrested from Maholi area for allegedly distributing liquor among electorates in a bid to influence them in favour of a Congress candidate, Additional Director General of Police (law and order) Brij Lal told reporters.

The arrested have been identified as Santram, Rajaram, Nand Kishore, Moti Lal, Vijay Kumar and Ashok Kumar Tiwari, he said, adding six bottles of liquor along with the format of ballot paper was recovered from their possession. As many as 193 candidates will cross swords in 36 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council seats going to polls tomorrow.
