Sited on Waqf land, Urdu University has no masjid

The Maulana Azad National University is sprawled over 212 acres of Waqf land at Gachibowli. Although majority of the university students are Muslims, there is no prayer hall in the premises, as a result students face lot of difficulties in offering Namaz. Yesterday over 200 students offered Namaz-e-Juma at the sports complex of the university. The university even lacks basic facilities for Juma prayer.

Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) is a Central University established in 1998 by an act of Parliament. 21 acre land out of 1700 acre waqf land endowed under Dargah Husain Shah Vali was allotted for the university. Waqf Board has to say that it has not received any compensation for the precious land so far, in spite of the fact that the land could otherwise have fetched thousands of crores of rupees.

University sources informed that earlier the Namaz-e-Juma was offered at parking space but now it is being offered at Indoor stadium (sports complex). Some students called Siasat editor Zahed Ali Khan’s attention towards the grievance of non-availability of masjid in the premises, on which Mr. Khan assured that if 700 sqyd land in the premises, is identified for construction of masjid and permission for the same is sought from the authorities, he is ready to build a magnificent Masjid with the cost of Rs. 1 crore. He lamented that the university is without a masjid despite being sited on Waqf land.
