Sister convinces thief to surrender

Mumbai, August 05: This was an unusual raksha bandhan gift for a sister. A 19-year-old youth, who had decamped with valuables worth Rs1.50 lakh from his employer’s house in Charkop, surrendered before the police after his sister persuaded him to do so.

The police said that Ghaari was hired by an elderly couple – Dansukh Salah, 65, and his wife Saroj, 61 – on July 30 as a cook. Barely a day into the job, he decamped with the cash and jewellery.

“On July 31, the couple went out for an evening walk. When they returned to their flat in Kandivili (West), they were surprised to see that Ghaari was missing,” said senior inspector P Gawande, Charkop police station.

“The couple had not bothered to lock the cupboard. They didn’t even have his address and contact details,” said Gawande, adding, that they later found out that Ghaari was from Rajasthan

The police then received a tip off about three men boarding a bus to Rajasthan. A police team immediately left for Ghaari’s native place. However, the accused, who had asked two of his friends to accompany him, outsmarted the cops by alighting a few stops before his hometown.

The cops then decided to ask his sister for help. “We informed her about the situation. We asked her to talk to her brother and convince him to surrender,” said Gawande.
When Ghaari called his sister to ask about his friends, she told him that she knew about the crime he had committed and convinced him to surrender.

He was arrested under section 381 (theft by a servant) of the Indian Penal Code. We have recovered the stolen valuables from him,” said Gawande.
