Sir Syed Ahmad was not the founder of AMU: ABVP

Lucknow: After targeting the centres of learning like JNU and HCU, it is now the turn of AMU (Aligarh Muslim University) as the Hindutva brigade has taken up the task of snatching the prestigious AMU from Muslims.

After terming the off campus centers of AMU as ‘illegal’ by Modi govt , now ABVP the student wing of RSS has declared that Sir Syed Ahmad Khan was not the founder of the Aligarh Muslim University.

A sate-level workshop of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad in Agra on Saturday termed as “misinterpretation” the irrefutable fact that Sir Syed Ahmad Khan was the founder of the Aligarh Muslim University reported TOI.

Addressing the participants of the workshop ‘AMU Bachao Manch’ convenor and co-in charge of UP Bharatiya Janata Party’s teachers’ cell Dr Manvendra Singh said while AMU was established in 1920, Syed Ahmad Khan died much before, in 1897. “How can he then be founder of the AMU,” Dr Manvendra said, speaking to TOI on Saturday. He was addressing ABVP members who had come from all over the state.

Dr Manvendra further revealed that ‘AMU was established through a legislative act in 1920. But, he admitted that AMU College was established in 1875 which later became university through an Act’.

In the workshop, the Minority character of AMU was raked up and the ABVP members briefed about ‘how despite Congress governments and Muslim education ministers and three amendments in the AMU Act the issue of converting it into a minority institution never came up’.

ABVP state organising secretary Deepak Rishi Gaur said that ABVP members will also launch a campaign to demand quota for students from OBC and Dalit categories in AMU as the university despite being established through an Act had failed to provide reservation to said classes.

It may be recalled here that AMU has made headlines recently in connection with the Modi government questioning the minority character of AMU.

Sir Syed Ahmad established Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College in 1875 which later became Aligarh Muslim University in 1920.
