The Student Islamic Organisation (SIO) students wing of Jamat-e-Islami Hind has filed a PIL in Gujarat high court against Gujarat government’s decision to declare a holiday on October 26, though Eid-ul-Azha falls on October 27.
The PIL has asked the court to direct the government to declare a holiday on the day of the Eid. The case was mentioned before a bench comprising of Chief Justice Bhaskar Bhattacharya and Justice J B Pardiwala for early hearing. The hearing on the case is scheduled on Monday.
The PIL also cited the example of Eid-ul-Fitr that was celebrated on Monday, but the state government declared Sunday as holiday.
The PIL contended that though the government offers an optional holiday to the Muslims on the day of festival, but the students whose examinations are scheduled on October 27 cannot take benefit of that option.
