Various Sikh organisations observed the 31st anniversary of ‘Operation Blue Star’ here on Saturday at the Akal Takhat in the Golden Temple.
Akal Takhat jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh said that the operation was ‘unfortunate’ and added that the incident had hurt the sentiments of Sikhs.
“Sikhs can never forget the attack and will continue to observe anniversary to mark the attack on the Golden Temple,” he said during ‘ardaas’ (prayer).
The President of Akali Dal (Panth), Harpal Singh Cheema, alleged that Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandhak Committee (SGPC) had not allowed several Sikh leaders to take part in the ceremony. He said that the SGPC had allowed the Punjab Police to take control of the Golden Temple premises.
Meanwhile, the head of Damdami Taksal, Harpal Singh Khalsa, said that they have peacefully observed the event and paid tribute to the Sikh martyrs, who had lost their lives during Operation Blue Star.
The Dal Khalsa activists had also taken out a march in the city yesterday .
Amritsar Police Commissioner J.S. Aulakh stated that around 40 people belonging to various parties, including Shiv Sena, have been detained to prevent any untoward incident.
