Madurai, April 27: A police SI was today arrested by vigilance personnel in the district for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 1,500 for returning a stolen mobile phone to its owner, police said.
Manikandan of Iravadhanallur had lost his mobile phone and lodged a complaint with Subramaniapuram Police who found that it had been stolen by one of his employees and sold to a local shop owner for Rs 150. Police recovered the phone.
However, Sub-Inspector Jayaraj allegedly demanded Rs 1,500 from Manikandan to return the phone.
On a complaint from him, Vigilance and Anti-Corruption DSP Marirajan set up a trap and arrested Jayaraj while he was allegedly receiving the bribe money this morning.
He was produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody for 15 days, police said.
