Shortcuts to Philosophical Musings in Google Age

Dubai, December 07: While philosophers have beaten their brains out over centuries, the younger generation has another way to seek the meaning of life: Google it.

According to statistics from Google, among the top 10 UAE internet searches over the last year include the questions ‘what is life?’ and ‘what is love?’

“People type anything into Google, even the big questions of life,” said Gaurav Aidasani, Managing Director of internet marketing firm Cosmos Star Consultants.

Other top searches by UAE internet users over 2009 was for Flydubai and the Arabic-language computer game, Tribal Wars.

The information came courtesy of Google Zeitgeist — a service which compiles the top-rated searches, country-by-country.

The most popular items on all search list were Youtube, Twitter and Facebook. Among the top ‘what is’ search queries were ‘what is recession?’ and ‘what is GDP?’

“Many people searching for things like recession and GDP want these things to be explained in layman’s’ terms,” said Aidasani. “Economics has been in the news a lot over the last year, but many people do not know what these key terms mean.”
