Shop owners of Badshahi Ashurkhana left in the lurch

Hyderabad, December 28: In the wee hours of Saturday, December 24 district administration’s enforcement cell and department of archeology, to implement Andhra Pradesh high court orders, ousted the owners of shops adjacent to historical Badshahi Ashurkhanas opposite to Madina building. With the joint efforts of District collector, police department and department of archeology, 16, 66 year old shops of teen sheets were dismantled located on the platform of Ashurkhanas and guard room. It must be noted that shop owners were served notice to evacuate the shops ahead of the demolition. This Ashurkhana constructed by Quli Qutub Shah had been renovated in Asaf Jahi rule and in 1992 it was taken over by department of archeology.

The government has allocated 4 crore 6 lakh rupees for rehabilitation and renovation of this beautiful building through which a museum will be constructed adjacent to it to make it a tourist spot. The work will begin within 2 months.

Police called for heavy police force before the demolition but the shop owners peacefully protested against demolition.

Three generations of these shop owners earned their living from these shops. The bread and butter of their family depend upon the shops alone. The 16 shop owners who are associated with these shops have become armless and unemployed after the demolition. They need justice and it would be done only when they are provided with an alternative.
