Shift in Foreign policy: India not in favour of support to Palestine at UN

According to The Hindu, the Modi government changing its stance for the Palestinian which could amount to a tectonic shift in the country’s foreign policy and the change will be a fundamental departure from India’s support to the cause of a Palestinian state.

As reported in The Hindu, India was one of the first non-Arab countries to recognize the Palestine Liberation Organization as “the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people.”

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj at the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit in New York in September said that India’s Palestine policy remained unchanged and remained committed to the Palestinian cause.

Even former Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee’s government which invited Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to India in 2003, made no changes to India’s voting record at the UN.

The BJP-led government has move closer to Israel as Israel is a cultural, scientific and military super power and India is the largest customer of military equipment from Israel with the military business estimated approximately US $9 billion.

Since the election of Narendra Modi in April, the diplomatic ties between Israel and India have warmed considerably.
