Sheila Dikshit made Delhi Congress chief

New Delhi: Former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit was on Thursday made the President of Delhi unit of the Congress, succeeding Ajay Maken who resigned six days back.

Former Delhi Minister Haroon Yusuf, Devender Yadav and Rajesh Lilothia were appointed as Working Presidents by party Chief Rahul Gandhi.

Making the announcements at a press conference here, Congress general secretary in charge of Delhi P C Chako said 80-year-old Dikshit is quite healthy and there were no issues on that front.

Addressing media after being appointed as Delhi Congress president, Dikshit said, “I feel honoured for that the party has given me this opportunity.”

Dikshit served as Delhi Chief Minister for three consecutive terms till 2013 before the Congress lost power.

Maken, a 54-year-old former minister in Dikshit’s Cabinet who stepped down as Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) president on January 4, was among the first to congratulate Dikshit.

“Congratulations to Sheila Dikshit ji for being appointed as Delhi Congress chief again. I had the privilege of working under her as her Political Secretary and Minister,” he tweeted.

He expressed confidence that under Dikshit’s leadership, the Congress will act as a “potent opposition to Modi+Kejriwal governments”.

Maken served as the party unit head for about four years before resigning citing health grounds.
The change of guard in Delhi Congress assumes significance as the party is gearing up to brighten its fortunes in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, considering that the BJP had bagged all the seven seats at stake in the capital in the last general elections.
